Amazon Prime Video will carry an NFL postseason game next season, people familiar with the matter confirmed to The Associated Press. It will be the second straight year that an important NFL game will be carried exclusively on a streaming platform. The Jan. 13 AFC wild-card game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins streamed on Peacock. According to various reports, NBCUniversal paid $110 million for the rights to the game, with Amazon expected to pay higher. This season’s 16-game package on Prime Video averaged 11.86 million viewers, according to Nielsen, a 24% increase over last year’s inaugural season.

The service will launch this fall and cater to sports fans who don't subscribe to the traditional cable bundle. One person associated with the launch of the new venture told CNBC the platform will be "a monster" and massively disrupt cable TV. Cable TV has been relegated to an add-on that helps keep people subscribing to high-speed internet. The cable bundle has largely survived because it still contains exclusive live news and sports. Previously, the only way for cord cutters to get ESPN outside the cable bundle would have been that coming service.

Read previewMost people who wanted to watch the Dolphins-Chiefs playoff game this past weekend had to do so by paying for Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service. On Sunday, NBC said the streaming game was a success: Depending on how they measured it, the network said the game averaged an audience of 23 million to 26 million viewers. But we won't really know if the game was a success for NBC until it announces the most important metric: How many people paid for Peacock so they could watch the game? Before Saturday's game, NBCUniversal's parent company, Comcast, had said Peacock had 30 million paid subscribers. But that number will almost certainly determine whether NBC or any other service pays up for a streaming-only playoff game next year.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Saturday night's AFC wild-card playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on Peacock set a record for the most-watched event on a streaming service. According to Nielsen, the Chiefs' 26-7 victory in frigid temperatures averaged 23 million viewers on Peacock, NFL+ and on NBC affiliates in Kansas City and Miami. Last year’s first-round playoff game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars averaged 20.61 million viewers. Judging by the audience, Saturday's game is unlikely to be the last playoff matchup shown on a streaming service. Under the NFL’s contract, each of its four broadcast partners — NBC, CBS, Fox and ESPN/ABC — gets at least one wild-card game.

CNN —The cable bundle is losing its biggest edge over the streaming competition: live sports. For years, live sports and news have been the cornerstone of the immutable cable bundle. Max is set to launch a live news channel next week, with the birth of CNN Max, the first cable news network to offer a 24/7 live streaming news service. With live news and sports now making their way to streaming, piece by piece, the Jenga puzzle of the cable bundle has started to destabilize. Once ESPN is available directly to consumers, the decades-long grip of the traditional cable bundle will surely fade considerably.

Viewers of Saturday's Perseid meteor shower might see up to 100 "fireballs" per hour at its peak. To best see them, move away from the city and let your eyes adapt to the night sky for half an hour. That's because fireballs are just what they sound like: exceptionally brilliant meteors that are rarer the brighter they are, according to the American Meteor Society. Lucky for meteor enthusiasts of all ages, the popular Perseid meteor shower , set to peak August 13, could bring up to 100 fireballs an hour, Insider previously reported. According to previous reporting from Insider, you have the best chance of seeing the shower in the pre-dawn hours.

As the political world settled in for a long wait to know who will control Congress, Republicans began finger-pointing Wednesday about whether former President Donald Trump was to blame for their lackluster election night. The Georgia Senate race is headed to a December runoff, NBC News projects, making it increasingly likely control of the upper chamber won't be decided until then. "Now that it’s obvious the @gop should expel the Trump family from its future lexicon," Trump critic and Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois tweeted Wednesday morning.
